No Frills Airline

Title

No Frills Airline

Subject

Carol Burnett Show episode 1975

Description

The Carol Burnett Show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1978, becoming one of the most popular variety shows of the 1970s. One 1975 episode featured this sketch, parodying the “no frills” section of an airline. A few airlines added these sections to their coach cabins prior to deregulation, but many more added them after 1978 in order to offer competitive low fares. Although some passengers took advantage of “no frills” options, as this sketch demonstrates, nobody enjoyed the scant services. Many customers refused to consider “no frills” sections under any circumstances, but airlines continued to offer them, as talking points if nothing else.
