"A Monthly Check to You"
Title
"A Monthly Check to You"
Subject
Social Security
Description
This 1936 poster, produced by the new Social Security Administration (SSA) and distributed with the help of labor unions, aimed to familiarize the American people with the benefits due to them under the Old Age Insurance program created by the Social Security Act of 1935. OAI was not the only program created by the 1935 law. It also include Unemployment Insurance, Aid to Dependent Children and certain provisions regarding mother and infant health. The social insurance titles of the new law -- OAI and UI - were financed by contributory payroll taxes. This financing scheme helped to legitimize these programs as earned "entitlements" and to distinguish them from "welfare" giveaways.
